">Holy Week in Seville...hundreds of Sevillians  participate by dressing up and carrying crosses, statues, and candles throughout the city...thousands and thousands of people come to watch.  Many Sevillanos believe that by participating in this tradition they are paying a penance for their sins...that by carrying these crosses and statues, often walking barefoot for hours through the city, they are receiving forgiveness. We've had to change rooms twice to get a room big enough! Ten to twelve of the students are Americans who come to help facilitate the small conversation groups. Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a famous festival in Seville that takes place every week before Easter. There are endless processionals throughout the streets of Seville with pasos (floats) of Mary, Jesus, disciples, and saints carried by men who often walk barefoot. In front of the pasos are nazarenos (men from brotherhoods of the Catholic church that are wearing the white outfits) who carry candles or sometimes crosses through the streets. Usually there is also a band that accompanies the pasos with songs or a drumbeat. It has been very interesting to watch, but also sad and frustrating. Many of the people who enjoy these extravagant processionals do so only because it is tradition. In Mark 7:8 Jesus said, "You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men." It takes up 11,520 square metres...pretty big! The first picture is the bones of Christopher Columbus. Well...maybe....there are two other places that also claim to have his bones. There are lots of parades and the tradition is that the three kings bring gifts to the children the next morning (you have to leave out your shoes!) There is usually one guitarrist, one or two singers, and a dancer. We went out to watch one night.
